Which weight-management appointment should I choose?

Stela offers nurse, doctor and dietitian consultations. Start with what you want help with, then confirm the right appointment before you book.

Unsure where to begin? Tell the clinic your main question before paying for an appointment.

Match the appointment to your question

Stela’s booking page describes three initial consultation types. The guide below is a starting point for asking the clinic which one suits your needs. It does not determine your eligibility for treatment.

Nurse consultation

Stela describes this as an initial assessment to discuss your goals and treatment options. Ask whether this appointment can address your main concern and when a doctor would need to be involved.

Doctor consultation

Stela describes a medical evaluation and personalised plan. Its homepage asks people considering other medication options or bariatric surgery discussions to book with a doctor. An appointment does not guarantee a prescription or referral.

Dietitian consultation

Stela offers a nutrition and lifestyle consultation. This is the relevant appointment to ask about when your main question concerns meals, food routines or putting nutrition advice into everyday practice.

Use your main concern to start the conversation

You do not need to know the clinical answer before contacting Stela. Explain the decision you want help making. For example:

  • “I am new to the clinic and want an assessment. Can you help me choose the right appointment?”
  • “I want to discuss the options beyond my current plan. Should I book a doctor?”
  • “I need a food plan that fits shift work and my household budget. Is a dietitian appointment the right place to start?”

These are suggested questions, not examples of promised treatment. If more than one concern matters to you, list them in order so the clinic can advise on the booking.

Confirm these details before booking

  • Is this an initial appointment or a follow-up?
  • Which clinician should I book for my main question?
  • What is included, and what could require a separate appointment?
  • What information should I provide in advance?
  • What fee applies, and what happens if I need to reschedule?

Check the current consultation fees and terms. Do not assume that choosing one appointment includes access to every member of the team.

When nutrition and medical questions overlap

You may want help with food while also discussing a medical concern. Health New Zealand explains that dietitians consider health and lifestyle when developing an eating plan. A dietitian consultation has a different purpose from a medical assessment, and your care may involve more than one professional. See sources.

Ask who will coordinate the next step and how you will know whether another appointment is needed. This is especially useful if your GP or another clinician already has a plan in place.

General information only. Your health history and circumstances need an individual clinical assessment. This guide does not promise eligibility, a prescription or a particular outcome.
