Planning a treatment change

Stopping Wegovy: planning your next stage of care

If you are thinking about stopping Wegovy, make the reason for the change the starting point of a review. Bring your concerns, current prescription and questions about what comes next.

Talk with your prescriber before stopping Wegovy. Agree what happens next and who will support your follow-up.

Start with the reason for the change

Do not stop Wegovy without talking to your doctor. Use it as prescribed until your doctor tells you to stop.

You may want to discuss cost, symptoms, your experience of treatment or a change in your plans. Write down the main reason in a sentence before the appointment. That gives your clinician a clear starting point and leaves more time for your questions.

Discuss what happens after treatment

Weight regain is highly likely after treatment stops. We discuss ongoing care because obesity is a chronic, relapsing condition.

Ask what your follow-up will look like, which changes to record and how you will raise concerns. You can also ask about dietitian support and the practical routines you want to continue.

Use a simple note with three columns: “What I want to continue”, “What I need help with” and “Who I will contact”. Include food routines, appointment arrangements and any questions that were left open at the last review.

Our meal-planning ideas can help you prepare a food-routine discussion. For cost questions, read about Wegovy funding and private payment.

Raise pregnancy plans early

Wegovy must not be used during pregnancy. For a planned pregnancy, it should be stopped at least two months beforehand. If you become pregnant, think you may be pregnant or are planning a baby while using it, talk to your doctor straight away because treatment will need to stop.

Put your intended timing at the top of the appointment note. Ask who will coordinate the change and any other medicines you use, and write down the agreed plan before you leave.

Separate a planned review from urgent symptoms

Severe, persistent stomach pain, breathing problems or swelling of the face or throat need immediate medical attention. Contact your doctor straight away or go to the nearest emergency department for serious side effects.

Read the side-effects guide for more detail. For a routine review, bring your prescribed strength, last injection date, other medicines and the reason you want to stop.

Before the review ends

Confirm the next step, the follow-up date, what to record and who to contact. Ask for clarification while the plan is being discussed if any instruction is unclear.
