Plan your medicines together

Mounjaro and the contraceptive pill

If you take the contraceptive pill, discuss it before starting Mounjaro or increasing your dose. Put contraception into the treatment plan from the beginning.

Arrange your contraception plan before the first Mounjaro dose and revisit it before each dose increase.

The four-week precaution

If you use an oral hormonal contraceptive, switch to a non-oral contraceptive method or add a barrier method for four weeks after starting Mounjaro and for four weeks after each dose increase.

Treatment pointWhat to arrange
Before startingDiscuss the non-oral method or added barrier method you will use.
First four weeksFollow the contraception plan agreed with your clinician.
Before each dose increaseConfirm the date and arrange the next four-week precaution period.
If dates or instructions are unclearAsk your clinician or pharmacist to check the plan with you.

Write the start date and the end of the precaution period in your calendar. If a dose increase changes those dates, update the calendar while you have the prescription instructions in front of you.

Why an oral medicine needs attention

Mounjaro delays stomach emptying and may affect how oral medicines are absorbed. Reduced effectiveness of oral hormonal contraception cannot be ruled out, which is why the additional precaution is advised.

Tell your prescriber the name of your pill, how you take it and whether another clinician manages it. Bring the packet or a photograph of the label. Ask the contraception prescriber and the Mounjaro prescriber to agree who will explain any change.

The aim is to leave the discussion with one clear set of instructions that you understand and can follow.

Questions for your appointment

  • Which contraception option fits my circumstances while using Mounjaro?
  • Who will arrange it and explain how to use it?
  • On which date should my added precaution start and finish?
  • What should I do if I have missed a pill or am unsure about protection?
  • Who should I contact if the Mounjaro dose-change date moves?

If you are worried about a recent contraceptive problem, seek advice from your doctor or pharmacist promptly. Give the dates rather than waiting until your next routine weight-management appointment.

Pregnancy plans and medicine reviews

Mounjaro should not be used during pregnancy. Discuss pregnancy plans with your doctor; treatment should be discontinued if you wish to become pregnant or become pregnant.

Bring the full list of medicines and supplements you use to that conversation. Keep a note of the agreed next step and which clinician you will contact with questions.

Your written plan

My contraception contact is ____. My Mounjaro start or increase date is ____. My agreed method is ____. I will confirm the next step on ____.

If you miss a weekly injection, read the separate Mounjaro missed-dose instructions. Ask your clinician how any treatment change fits with your contraception plan.
