How the medicines differ

Wegovy contains semaglutide, a GLP-1 receptor agonist. Mounjaro contains tirzepatide, which acts on both GIP and GLP-1 receptors. Both are given as weekly injections under the skin.

The Wegovy FlexTouch pen contains four doses. The Mounjaro KwikPen also contains four fixed doses; leftover medicine must not be used as an extra dose.

Compare the parts of care that affect your week

For Mounjaro or other medicines besides Wegovy, book a doctor consultation with us rather than a nurse consultation.

Use the appointment to work through the whole routine, from collecting a prescription to arranging the next review. A medicine name alone does not answer those practical questions.

  • Ask who will explain your injection technique and answer pen questions.
  • Describe your working hours, travel plans and any concerns about keeping a weekly routine.
  • Ask when to arrange the next appointment and what to record beforehand.
  • Separate the consultation fee from the pharmacy quote.

Wegovy and Mounjaro are not publicly funded for weight loss in New Zealand. If prescribed, you pay for the medicine; your pharmacy can confirm its price.

Bring the health details that matter

Tell your clinician about your other medicines, medical conditions, allergies and pregnancy or breastfeeding plans before using either medicine.

Mounjaro can affect the contraceptive pill. People using an oral hormonal contraceptive should switch to a non-oral method or add a barrier method for four weeks after starting Mounjaro and after each dose increase.

Read our Mounjaro and contraceptive-pill guide to prepare that discussion. Bring the names and strengths from the packets, rather than trying to remember them during the appointment.

My budgetWhat would I pay for appointments and pharmacy supply?

Leave space beside each answer for the agreed next step. If you are still weighing cost, our Wegovy funding guide explains how funding differs from approval.
